Dark, Simple Jewelery Among CT’s Top Prom Trends for 2023

Juniors and seniors all over Connecticut are preparing for the big night, prom. The main trends in fashion this year are A-line fitted dresses and dark colors.
Atiana’s Boutique in Milford has been selling wedding dresses and other formal wear since 1984. The team searches for the latest and latest trends to sell in store through catalogs and fashion shows. The store received more than 500 styles in a variety of colors and sizes this year, according to assistant Stephanie Lesson.
“We continue to consider red and blue to be our top color choices,” she said. “Bright colors like sage green and lilac are also trending this year.”
Westport’s Winged Monkey is also trending in sage, although pastel sales are down overall from last year.
“We’ve seen people lean toward darker colors like royal blues, emeralds and blacks,” said sales manager Madison Sell. And less ‘poofs’.”

Last year, colors such as orange, light blue, and lavender purple were popular dress colors.
In terms of style, Leson says corset gowns are in high demand at Atiana’s.
Both Lesson and Sel have found backless dresses and leg slits to be popular this season.
This year, Atiana’s Boutique features Jovani, Sherri Hill, Portia and Scarlett designs featuring sequins in a variety of patterns, including geometric and floral patterns. But on Winged Monkey, sequins aren’t very popular.
“People have been asking for something simple and fit, without strings attached,” Sel said. “We didn’t see any bigger requests for glitter starting this year than last year.”

Sel also pointed out that the outfits are casual and even have floral prints.
As far as shoes go, Sell says there’s a move toward more subtle styles, rather than chunky, strappy styles. But for Atiana’s, the most popular shoe in stock is the sparkly open-toe style with chunky heels.
“People are wearing more statement shoes, like pink shoes with black dresses,” Sel said. “They’re definitely going for stilettos or slimmer shoes.”
To tie in with the simple look, Winged Monkey also reduced the amount of jewelry worn with the dress. Sel said customers were leaning toward larger earrings, but noticed that the neckline portion was left “open” rather than the necklace.

The tuxedo trend is also evolving. Middletown’s modern informal style is a black tuxedo with a blue or red vest.
Suspenders and bow ties are also available this season. Sardominero, president of Modern His Informals, said demand for his fitted, high-waisted trousers is also high.
“We are back in a time when people just want a classic look,” said Dominello.
